Featherstone Obsidian 1 Person Backpacking Tent

The tent seem very well made considering the price. Will use it this weekend and update afterward.

Waited to write this review until I used the tent a few times. Used it on multiple AT section hikes. The tent is great, but even moreso for the cost. The value is through the roof. I love that it is more like a 1.5 person tent. There's a lot of extra room for gear along with a vestibule for your pack if it's raining. Rained very hard one night on the trail and the bathtub bottom worked perfectly. Very highly recommend this tent.

I've been using it for a few years, I initially got it as a budget tent with the intention of replacing it later, but the quality of it is shocking. It has survived through multiple floods, intense thunderstorms, tornados with winds exceeding 60mph (these did bend my tent poles though, but that was my own fault for not setting up the guylines), freezing temps, you name it. All without a single drop of rain getting in the tent, or condensation build up. Amazing product, I love everything about it.

This tent is awesome! I chose this setup because it has a good amount of room. I can fit my 25” wide sleeping pad along with my backpack and other gear! It’s easy to setup and take down, I didn’t have any issues with the pole setup.
It’s first time use was in about higher 20° weather on frosted ground and it held up pretty well. It had a little sag in the morning from the frost build up but I stayed nice and dry all night!

Most of the tents I've bought are two or three times as expensive because I just stuck with brands I was familiar with. Recently I've gotten to try new types of cheaper tents because of vine, and I have to say, I'm really glad. Ten years ago if you told me I could get an ultralight tent for less than $100 I wouldn't have believed you. This tent is great proof that cheaper doesn't mean worse.For starters, it's way lighter than the tents I'm used to. When I get rid of the extra stakes and footprint (because I usually just carry a multipurpose tyvec tarp) it's a bit under 3 lb. The full tent packs in to about half the volume of my sleeping bag. Even so, I could easily fit a 60L+ backpack inside with me and still sleep flat on my back. I haven't gotten to use it outdoors yet as I just got it, but I checked all the seams and they seem fine. I'll update after I get a chance to use it. Takes about 5 min to set up and it's mostly free standing which makes setting it up by yourself easy.

I've always wanted an ultralight 1 person tent. When I was a kid, I envied the richer kids who got toys like this for their backpacking trips.Although I can't use it right now (winter and quarantine together make for bad bedfellows), I did set it up and watch my kid take it over immediately.My impressions:1. The aluminum poles are all joined together in a single assembly with a star fitting at the top. This allows for fairly quick setup. It does mean that you need a little bit of free space around you, but that's only really an issue if you, like I, are trying to test it out in your living room.2. While you can set this up without staking, you will need to stake it in order to get the corners to stand up as designed. Each corner has a semi-rigid rib sewn into it that pops up when you put some tension on the corner by staking it in, and this allows the waterproof lip to stand up as designed.3. Poles are fully clip-on, no sleeves on the tent.4. This will be a really nice 'under the stars' tent with the fly off, as it's completely mesh on top.5. The fly has a ventilation flap with its own sewn-in semi-rigid strut to keep it open. The strut collapses flat for storage.6. The tent comes with its own custom-sized groundcloth whose corner holes are aligned with the tent stake holes.

As a rule, I avoid tent camping at all costs. I hated it as a kid and my memories of tents are ugly, heavy, bulky, leaking messes. However, I managed to convince myself that I need to do a couple of 25 mile, overnight, backcountry trips on horseback this year. That means a tent and the least bulk and weight possible since it needs to fit in saddle bags. I think this one will do well.This tent is roomier inside than it looks and that was a welcome surprise. Plenty of space for me, my backpack and saddle bags to spend the night. The rain cover thing will add a bit of privacy to the base mesh construction as well as rain/dew protection. It was simple to put up by myself and I feel confident that I can manage this tent by myself in the desert mountains in April.It does fit in my saddle bag, barely, but it's in there and room for the blanket. Everything else will go in my backpack.

I tried this tent based on positive reviews, and I can totally agree on all the good points.This is extremely lightweight tent but well designed. Aluminum poles displays good quality and fabric seems decent.Honestly, considering the price, this is the one. This is rare exception that price point does not require any compromises. Top quality 1a-1.5man tent. Easy to assemble and everything is included. All other components look solid too. The only little hiccup is the single pole side seems little too tense but this is not notable. If any issue arises from this, I’ll change the review accordingly.Overall, a great choice! I want to try other stuff from this brand.

Just got back from a weekend up on California's Lost Coast where I broke in the Obsidian 1P. Tent performed well, with no surprises (which was great); I learned a few things along the way, too. Overall, I was really pleased and wholly intend to keep using it as my primary tent, with it performing admirably as a car camping tent. I'm debating how suitable it'd be for backpacking, as it's still ~3lb and definitely takes up a fair bit of space when packed (though I could probably roll it tighter if I tried.Highlights:- Straightforward setup and break down, with color-coded poles and straps.- Spacious interior was enough for myself with sleeping bag + pad, as well as to store a bag of clothes so it didn't get wet.- Rain fly has reinforced pockets for pole placement now (addressing previous reviewers' concerns)! I didn't even realize until I was breaking camp, but now I'll be sure to put the poles properly into the fly.- Retroreflective structure and lines shine bright in the dark under even just a red head lamp.Notes / considerations:- It's semi-freestanding (not fully-freestanding), so note that the bottom corners will sorta taper in if you don't stake them - and they stake farther out than the foundation's corners, so you need ~10 stakes (and more if you want to use guy lines on the rain fly).- Vestibule is a bit on the small side; enough to store a pair of shoes or similar but not quite enough room for a bag under there.- Single door, and the zipper placement can be a bit awkward under the fly if you don't keep it at the right place / when you want to fully roll up the door.

Fantastic single person tent! If using a standard width inflatable sleeping pad, there is enough room inside for gear. Easy to set up and big door makes it easy to get in and out. The great loft inside and interior pockets makes organization a breeze. For the price, the weight is decent and the quality is great. If you hike solo and are getting your first tent, this is a good option on a budget.

It’s an impressive little tent for what it is, which is a one person tent with poles for around 100 dollars. I bought this for my grumpy teenager for backpacking, who wasn’t interested in going the trekking pole route. It seems well made, with nice attention to the waterproofing details. The Bag included the tent, rain fly, some nice aluminum tent stakes and a footprint. With all the bags it weighs in out of the box at 3.74lbs. I think it would be closer to 3lbs after removing the extra bags and packaging, which is light enough. The advertised size of 4”x17” packed seems about right, which is to say it’s a good reasonable size but not the smallest tent out there. It’s pretty straightforward to setup, but if you are teenager who hates tent stakes, you need to accept that at least four are required here to make the tent structurally sound, including two in the front corners and then two for the rain fly. Interior is a good size for a person, tall with lots of headroom, a pack would need to go in the vestibule. My suggestion to improve the design would be to add more color coating to the pole hooks. Zippers are nice and work easily unlike other tents I’ve had. I like the bathtub floor design, and how far the rain fly come over it. Lots of headroom too, and a single side door. Really a nice tent overall, seems like a solid choice.

The whole upper portion of the tent is mesh mosquito netting so you have a great view at night. The side walls of the tent provide good wind protection and for a 1-person tent .. it is roomier than I expected for such a light weight piece of equipment. The quality of the tent is very good and I didn’t notice any flaws in workmanship or any visible defects.Setup was easy. It took me about 3 minutes to erect the tent. Simply lay it out. Hook in the 3 spider legs and clip the tent on. Insert the 2 short arms .. stake if necessary. Done.Take down was just as easy but took a little longer to stuff it all away. It was pretty tight in the stuff sack. So I had to take a couple runs at it before I got the proper compression.The tent has one offset door and it opens smoothly and widely. The tent has a couple retaining loops to hold the door open if needed.The instructions and warranty information are sewn into the label on the stuff sack. The label material is durable and waterproof so you can’t lose it. Nice.I am hard pressed to find anything that I didn’t like about this setup. If I had to pick something .. it would be the tent stuff sack is extremely thin. Almost feels like grocery bag thin. However, on the plus side, it is ripstop, waterproof and ultra light. So is it a negative …The manufacturer offers a Limited Lifetime Warranty.I received this product in exchange for an honest review. All in all, this appears to be a well made piece of equipment. When reduced to trail weight, it is a very practical solution as a 3-season tent. The quality seems very good and in my testing of the tent. It passed all of our testing protocols. The tent did not have any unusual odors or chemical smell and was clean and ready for the trial. With a simple setup that is easy to remember due to the grommet placements. One grommet on one end of the tent and two on the other. So you know where your spider legs go quickly. Great design and roomy for a 1-person tent. For a $100 tent at the writing this review. You can spend a lot more and get a lot less than this tent offers. Definitely recommend this product as it appears to me the manufacturer put thought into the functionality of the product and it shows.This product is made in China.

Very nice little tent. Very light and seems well made. It comes with a waterproof footprint and I was surprised. That is nice. The tent does require you to stake it or it will not open up at your feet. Rainfly requires stakes to stay on as well. I'm over 6 feet and I fit well. Depending how big your pack is, it could get a little cozy. It is very light and will fit your pack nicely. The tent was easy to setup. The rainfly is harder, at least for me. The material is thin and light but seems tough. I'm going to be careful though, I wouldn't want to tear it. Now I just need to practice putting it up and down so I'm ready for the trail.Notes:- Requires the tent to be staked. It does not open completely without being staked.- Rainflies are always a pain. I need practice setting this up. Tent is easy. Rainfly I struggle with.- Comes with a footprint. This is not shown in the pics I saw. It can go under the tent and is waterproof. It says you can go ultralight and just take footprint and rainfly. That seems brave.- Ultra light thin material. Very light for your pack.- Check all your yellow ties. Mine were loose and needed to be retied.- I'm 6'2" and I fit in this tent.- Good fit for one person and a pack. It will be a little cozy if you are tight.- Aluminum poles are attached into one construction. Harder to lose.- I can move around enough to change clothes inside the tent.

Okay, so this tent is sold as ultralight. It even has 'UL' in the name.At about 3.75lbs for a 1 person tent, it is NOT ultralight.That being said, I REALLY like this tent.A double wall tent is great for a number of reasons.On warm summer nights you can leave the fly off and enjoy the stars and breeze while still being protected from bugs.When it's raining and wet, condensation will gather on the inside of the fly, (as opposed to the inside of the tent), and help keep you that much more dry.For a 1 person tent, it's pretty roomy. Enough room on the floor for an extra wide air mattress and all your clothes and stuff, and enough head room to sit up straight and stretch out.There is quite a bit of room in the vestibule also, enough for your pack and shoes, with space left over to cook in if the weather sucks.As other reviews have mentioned, it would have been nice to have a pocket or two inside to store your phone or headlamp, but I guess that would have just added more weight. At least is has the loop at the top. I hang my headlamp from it with a small carabiner, it works.On my scale the entire package weighs 3lb 12.6oz.You could probably shave 3-4 ounces off of that by using a polycryo ground sheet, and another ounce or two using Ti shepard's hook stakes instead of the aluminum 'Y' stakes it comes with. But really, if you're THAT concerned about weight, you should probably just go ahead and spend more money.About that:At the time of this review, this tent sold for just under $100. I feel that is an EXCELLENT value!Materials and craftsmanship are excellent.Seams are all taped and sealed, zippers are high quality and smooth.I recently took it on a low-mileage, 2 night trip. It rained pretty much the whole time and there were no leaks. As I stated earlier, condensation was easy to manage.The tent is 'almost' free-standing, in that it technically doesn't require the stakes to set it up. However, the corners at the foot-end really need some kind of structure to give you maximum square footage inside. I have seen folks use their trekking poles to achieve this on other tents, so I suppose you could do the same with this one if you had to set up somewhere you couldn't use stakes, (hard rock or soft sand/snow).Who is this tent for?Folks just getting into the game who don't have a ton of money to spend on truly UL gear.There are lighter options out there, but not at either the quality of this one, the features or the low price. Pick one, but you won't find all of them together in a different tent.Then, down the road, you can invest in a lighter system and have this one to loan/gift/sell to someone just getting started.
